Training
IDEA and its associates have developed and delivered disability equality training (DET), as well as facilitating a number of key events focused on disability and development. These have included:

Delivering a series of DET sessions for the UK staff of World Vision.

Facilitating an EU-funded conference in Malta for young disabled (YDP) people from throughout Europe (2005). The conference was based on peer-to-peer education and YDP setting their own agenda for self directed learning.  

Delivered a five-day training course on disability rights and empowerment for  an international group of disability activists as part of an international networking event for the British Council

Provided disability equality training for British Council staff.

Developed and facilitated a UNICEF-funded five-day disability equality social action course for childcare practitioners in Moscow working with disabled children. This formed part of the Deinstitutionalisation of Childcare Project, designed to introduce staff to alternative practice methods and disability rights issues.

Delivered a series of DET courses for DFID’s UK staff focused on human resource issues around disability and new UK legislation. A disability equality training pack, based on the course, was developed for country offices.

Worked in partnership with the British Council in Bulgaria to set up groups for young disabled people across the country.  Young disabled people (YDP) from the UK became peer trainers for YDP in Bulgaria.  The local partner was the Centre for Independent Living in Sofia.  Four social action training programmes were facilitated with adults and young disabled people to enable them to establish young disabled people’s groups based on peer to peer education and self organisation.

IDEA ran three independent living courses for young disabled people in Manchester.  The courses are based on participatory and experiential learning.  

Provided five-day disability equality capacity building training courses for members of disability organisations in three areas of Mozambique – Nampula, Beira and Maputo – followed by two 3-day consultancies in each region. This was as part of a Power International project.

Developed a short course (two-weeks) on mainstreaming disability in development cooperation for those working on international disability issues as part of the DKaR programme
